The study we set out to develop, whose object of study is a group of captains in the service of the crown in the context of the Portuguese Expansion in the Indian Ocean, constitutes and seeks to characterize these officers in the service of the king of Portugal between 1510 and 1557. This study sought to describe and analyze the exercise of the office of captain of Goa, from the conquest of this stronghold on the Malabar coast, on the West Coast of India, which took place during the reign of King Manuel I, until the end of the reign of his son, King João III. This study aims first and foremost to answer a set of questions associated with the importance of the performance of the agents studied in running an empire under construction, particularly in Asia, in terms of how they enabled the expansion and stabilization of new territories under the rule of the Portuguese sovereigns in the first half of the 16th century. To better characterize the individual and collective journeys of our agents, we tried to elaborate on the social context in which they were integrated, namely their social status, which was one of the aspects we sought to deepen in order to better understand their motivations and their aspirations, both material and symbolic. We also sought to understand and analyze the power relations based above all on family solidarity that constituted networks and power groups, which also allowed us to understand the image of the whole and its constituent parts, whose power dynamics allowed us to identify the existence of continuities and ruptures in the strategies developed in the Estado da Índia in general and in the captaincy of Goa in particular. In the context of the Portuguese Expansion, this study, using the Prosopography, seeks to understand the journeys of the captains who governed the captaincy of Goa, integrated into the dynamics of a wider space, the Estado da Índia, thus trying to understand the importance of their political and military action in stabilizing and consolidating the Portuguese presence in Asia.
