Resumo(s)
This paper conducts an economic valuation of eight ecosystem services to investigate the cost
and benefits associated with utility-scale solar energy projects in Portugal. The study reveals
that in nine out of the ten cases analyzed, the ecological benefits of solar plants outweigh their
ecological costs. However, the adverse effects observed in the negative case highlight the need
for careful site selection, avoiding ecologically rich areas. The findings suggest policy
adaptations and endorse the incorporation of nature-inclusive design elements in new projects,
emphasizing the necessity of a balanced approach in the renewable energy sector.
