Exploring the impact of Industry 4.0 and 5.0 on the sustainability performance of the German
automotive supply chain, this study delves into integrating Industry 4.0 technologies alongside
sustainability, resilience, and human-centricity principles (Industry 5.0). Employing
methodological triangulation revealed economic, environmental, and social benefits, problems,
and associated challenges. While economic benefits often trigger the adoption of new
technologies, positive environmental effects frequently emerge concurrently. To maximise the
sustainability performance holistically, it is crucial to fully integrate Industry 4.0 technologies
and consider the principles of Industry 5.0, as well as overcoming challenges in the areas of
data usage, security, and human barriers.
