Intertextuality is a theme that has been studied by several researchers over the years (cf. Bakhtin, in the 1930s, or Kristeva, in the 1960s, among others). Despite the concept eliciting different interpretations, it is understood here as a direct or indirect dialogue between different textual elements. Starting from the Pessoa-Saramago binomial, it is possible to expand the network of literary and cultural relationships of the authors’ works, with the intention of developing in students a more refined awareness of literature as a ‘prism of perspectives’, some given by the text itself and others illuminated by the relationship of the text with other cultural objects. In this way, a dialogue between various texts (of a literary and non-literary nature) or other media (photographs, paintings, films) and two central works of the 12th grade, the odes of Ricardo Reis and the novel “The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis” by José Saramago, allow for the summoning, within each class, of a set of aspects that illuminate the complexity and multiplicity of meanings contained in the literary works.
