Resumo(s)
Using exhaustive data on the Portuguese labour force, we present compelling evidence
on peer effects as an explanatory variable of workers’ future outcomes. Employing a
tight identification strategy that circumvents well-known endogeneity concerns, we
estimate that a one standard deviation increase in average coworker quality increases
workers’ next year wages by 4.8%. At the same time, we also observe that despite
fading away with time, these peer effects are persistent and remain significant after 10
years. Furthermore, we analyse the heterogeneous effects of peers obtaining results
suggestive of ability-related segregation within peer groups as well as ability-specific
peer effects persistence.
