This paper reflects on the origin of the internet as well as the underlying emergence of web
services. It can be observed, that the development of the web enables real-time information
exchange between humans, huge opportunities for interactions as well the symbiosis of humans
and machines. Internet of Things has been pointed out as one of the main topics of Web 4.0 in
this paper and enables a variety of different application cases and benefits for organizations.
Combining IoT with Blockchain and data analytic methods within a system architecture for
businesses may result in tremendous efficiency increases. The potential on the example supply
chain management is great and provides the basis for a secured and transparent collaboration.
