Resumo(s)
Legally empowering women promotes women’s participation in the economy, drives
macroeconomic benefits, and entails the opportunity to change the position of women in
society. This study explores whether laws that strengthen women’s physical integrity and
self-determination can elevate female empowerment in a least developed country. I use the
Penal Code of Mozambique of December 31, 2014, which legalizes abortions and
criminalizes marital rape, to perform a Difference-in-Discontinuities analysis. Utilizing
Demographic and Health Survey data from Mozambique, Malawi, and Zimbabwe, I find a
significant decline in reported sexual violence and clear indications of increased female
empowerment.
