Artificial intelligence (AI) has seen major developments in recent years. Despite its numerous
benefits, laypeople often lack the required background knowledge to understand how AI
makes decisions. This opacity has created the black box problem which raised the need for
explainability in AI solutions. This paper analyzes the value of explainable AI from a
business perspective. It specifically addresses whether explainable AI can be recommended
for early-stage businesses to close the knowledge gaps of external stakeholders. The results
suggest that companies need to critically reflect on the benefits and costs of explainability and
various other factors when making this decision.
