This thesis conducted an exploratory investigation into user perceptions of Duolingo's
effectiveness and user experience, utilizing qualitative research through thematic analysis of 20
semi-structured interviews. The interviewees, recruited through convenience and snowball
sampling methods, offered praise Duolingo's design and accessibility but criticize its lack of
comprehensive grammar instruction. Most notably, some users reported a motivational shift from
active learning to merely maintaining their daily streak. These findings highlight the need for a
continued development of Duolingo, particularly in sustaining genuine learning motivation
beyond game mechanics.
