Archaeology is the science that studies the traces that human society left behind. From North to South, from East to West, there is no place where human beings have not passed and left their legacy. Currently there are several ways in which archaeology reaches the public. Whether through films and television series or books, through social media or school activities, through specialized activities or volunteering in excavations, archaeology is now everywhere all year round. Several archaeologists cite a different reason for pursuing this career. There are those who cite films, there are those who cite excavations and archaeologists, there are those who cite documentaries, there are those who cite books. The possibilities are immense. However, there is no study on the reason that led archaeologists to choose this route. Likewise, as there is no study, it is not possible to define whether the communication of this science or its involvement with the public had any influence on the choice of the course and what could be undertaken so that this influence has more credit in the final decision. This study proposes to meet first-year students from five Portuguese universities with a degree in archaeology and identify the ways in which they related to this science before choosing the course. The options provided are diverse to identify which type of activity or media had more weight compared to others and thus determine whether the influence of archaeology communication is greater or lesser compared to other means. The data collected here, and its interpretations will influence proposals to improve the chances of archaeology communication having more weight than identified.
