Estudo e Conservação de Quatro Alba Amicorum do Tikva Museu Judaico Lisboa

Em Novembro de 2022, o recentemente criado Tikva Museu Judaico Lisboa recebeu uma
doação da família Eschborn pela mão da descendente Maria José Magalhães de Vasconcelos
Mota. Nesta doação, entre outros documentos, estavam inclusos quatro alba amicorum, sendo
dois deles pertencentes a Carmen Eschborn Magalhães (1914 – 1987) e os outros dois
pertencentes à sua mãe, Rosa Levi Eschborn (1879 – 1967), respetivamente, avó e bisavó da
doadora.
Um alba amicorum é um pequeno livro ou caderno, onde amigos e conhecidos contribuem
nas suas páginas com inscrições, lemas, dedicatórias e mensagens, acompanhando-as muitas
vezes com desenhos e colagens. O conceito surgiu durante o século XVI, nas regiões
transalpinas de língua alemã e neerlandesa, e tem início entre as elites estudantis
universitárias, onde jovens académicos recolhiam assinaturas de figuras notáveis do mundo
académico, científico e cultural.
A presente dissertação propôs estudar estes quatro alba amicorum tanto do ponto de vista
histórico e conceitual, como do ponto de vista material e no âmbito da sua conservação e
restauro, tentando desta forma contribuir para o aumento da investigação deste tipo de
artefactos, ainda muito pouco desenvolvida. Especificamente, o corpus estudado permitiu
compreender diversos aspetos no campo da materialidade destes objetos na Alemanha – como
por exemplo a utilização de agrafos metálicos na união de cadernos ou o revestimento das
pastas com tecido impregnado – assim como a sua estrutura documental – como por exemplo
a utilização de scraps ou a escrita kurrenstschift.
A reflexão sobre os conceitos, valores e a materialidade destes objetos foi essencial para
a tomada de decisão sobre os tratamentos de conservação e restauro a aplicar. Com a
intervenção realizada, os alba adquiriram novamente a estrutura e estabilização necessária
para o seu manuseio, ainda que limitado e sempre cuidadoso. Foi possível ainda propor
medidas preventivas para a sua exposição e acondicionamento, tendo em conta o
conhecimento adquirido sobre a sua materialidade e deterioração associada.
In November 2022, the recently created Tikva Jewish Museum Lisbon received the donation of the Eschborn family by the hand of the descendant Maria José Magalhães de Vasconcelos Mota. In this donation, among other documents, were included four alba amicorum, two of them belonging to Carmen Eschborn Magalhães (1914 - 1987) and the other two belonging to his mother, Rosa Levi Eschborn (1879 - 1967), both respectively, grandmother and great-grandmother of the donor Maria José Mota. An album amicorum is a small book or notebook, where friends and acquaintances contribute on its pages with inscriptions, mottos, dedications, and messages, often accompanying them with drawings and collages. The concept emerged during the 16th century in the German and Dutch-speaking Transalpine regions, and begins among university student elites, where young academics collected signatures of notable figures from the academic, scientific, and cultural world. The present dissertation proposed to study these four alba amicorum both from the historical and conceptual point of view, as well as from the point of view of their materiality and in the scope of their conservation and restoration, trying to contribute to the increase of the investigation of this type of artifacts, still very little developed. Specifically, the corpus studied allowed to understand several aspects in the field of the materiality of these objects in Germany - such as the use of wire sewing in the union of notebooks or the coating of pastes with woven fabric - as well as their structure documentary - such as the use of scraps or the kurrenstschift script. The reflection on the concepts, values and materiality of these objects was essential for decision making on the conservation and restoration treatments to be applied. With the intervention performed, the alba acquired again the structure and stabilization necessary for their handling, although limited and always careful. It was also possible to propose preventive measures for its exposure and packaging, considering the knowledge acquired about its materiality and associated deterioration.
