As we enter the new century, China's comprehensive national strength has been improving and its status and influence in the international arena have been growing. Integration into the world economy has led to the rapid development of inter-regional trade co-operation between China and the countries of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP). This co-operation is considered to have great potential, which has led to an increase in demand for Portuguese and Chinese speakers. Chinese universities and colleges offer Portuguese language courses and programmes. However, their offer is often limited to teaching the language for general and academic purposes, and does not provide for the development of skills and training in areas that are associated with it at a strategic and diplomatic level (translation, internet, foreign trade, etc.). This dissertation starts by analysing the situation of Portuguese language teaching for specific purposes in China and aims to provide guidance for the creation of specific materials for Chinese undergraduate students, non-native learners of Portuguese, with a proficiency level above (C1). We have divided the study into four parts. In the first part, we look at the concept of foreign language, the teaching of languages for general and specific purposes and the teaching of Portuguese outside Portuguese-speaking countries. In the second part, we analyse the teaching of Portuguese as a foreign language in Chinese higher education and the existing teaching materials for teaching and learning this language in the domestic market. In the third part, we focus our attention on relations between China and Portuguese-speaking countries by analysing existing data, attaching special importance to trade relations and the training needs of human resources in terms of mastering the Portuguese language. In the fourth part, we present a didactic unit for business purposes for C1 level university students. This takes into account the importance of developing intercultural competence and the terminology used in foreign trade, in order to provide students with the tools to better fulfil their duties in this specific context and gain an insight into the thinking of the peoples of Portuguese-speaking countries.
