The present work aims to study the conception of number and infinity in Wittgenstein’s thought. These two conceptions are studied in particular in the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus and in the Philosophical Remarks. Particular focus is given to the conception of a real number in the Remarks. Emphasis is laid to the way in which the conceptions of number and infinity are interconnected, both in the Tractatus and in the Remarks. A reading of the Tractarian infinity is proposed based on the Fogelin-Geach dispute, as well as a particular formulation of Leo Cheung’s “Finitarian Thesis”. An original conceptualization of the expression “true expansion” of the Remarks and an essentially epistemological reading of the concept “explicit reference” of Victor Rodych and Jairo Da Silva are also proposed. Finally, the concept of “induction” in Remarks and the respective interpretation by Tim Lampert are problematized.
