Resumo(s)
After COVID-19, short-video social software led by TikTok and Douyin (Chinese version) became popular worldwide. At the same time, some traditional media gradually fell out of young people’s attention due to their old forms and failure to keep up with the trend. In this environment, short-video news self-media have begun to take their place in China’s media industry. This study aims to explore the rise of short-video news self-media in China and its profit model. Although the literature on this field is relatively limited, short video news self-media, as an emerging form of media, has important research value. This dissertation first introduces relevant concepts, including short video, self-media, and short video news, to provide readers with background knowledge. Then, it discusses in detail the basic operation mode, content characteristics, and profitability of Douyin. In addition, this study explains the creators’ motivations and examines the impact of censorship and self-censorship on self-media in China. This dissertation hopes to fill the research gap of short video news self-media and provide insights for understanding media transformation and news ecological change.
