Reading is an essencial practice when it comes to learning, mainly in what concerns language acquisition of L2 learners. Having that in mind, the present dissertation had as its main goal the presentation and exposition of what extensive reading is, its importance in acquiring linguistic knowledge and the positive impact it has on students’ learning path, so that it is possible to build a document dedicated exclusively to this concept and conclude its significance for L2 learners, more precisely of portuguese as a second language and portuguese as a foreign language. Therefore, the dissertation is divided into four chapters to structure its content. The first chapter highlights the concept of reading from the perspective adopted in this research. The second chapter introduces extensive reading as a concept, in order to give the reader an initial idea about it. The third chapter presents the opinions of Stephen Krashen, Richard R. Day and Jeff McQuillan, while focusing on some particularities of this type of reading. The forth chapter addresses extensive reading in a national context and aimed at the portuguese language, including what is defended by portuguese professionals, questions that must be answered and the measures created to put them into practice. Finally, the conclusion includes the lessons learned from this research and some proposals for what can be done and improved in teaching in Portugal, with the development of extensive reading as the main goal.
