On 6 February 2023, an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck Turkey. The intensity was such that the disaster also shook Syria, a country already marked by war. In view of this event, the period from 6 to 19 February, when the search for sur vivors ended, was delimited to study the evolution of the media coverage of this risky event over time. The mixed research included a content analysis of the Jornal da Tarde pieces and an interview with a journalist from the newsroom. It is concluded that the event was the subject of much media coverage in the first days, but that quickly other national events, due to the proximity of news value, took over the opening of the newspaper, already in the middle of the period under study. What kept the communica tion of the event alive throughout the days were the rescues of the survivors, which, contrary to expectations, took place until the fourteenth day. The pieces objectively showed the dramatic consequences of this catastrophe, but not equally between the tw o countries. RTP provided a true public service in its coverage of the earthquake, despite all the constraints experienced by a newsroom when reporting on an event of this caliber.
