A presente dissertação tem como objeto de estudo a indústria nacional do calçado no contexto da integração de Portugal na Comunidade Económica Europeia, em 1986. Com o propósito de compreender de que modo o setor do calçado se transforma durante as últimas duas décadas do século XX, é traçada uma perspetiva histórica da evolução da indústria desde a sua conceção em Portugal até ao momento do seu salto para um patamar de grande relevância no panorama industrial português. Chegados ao momento da integração de Portugal nas Comunidades é feita uma análise ao quadro do setor nas vésperas desta adesão, procurando compreender o modo como este fenómeno é recebido e interpretado por industriais e empresas nacionais da indústria do calçado, expondo também as suas expectativas e reticências em relação à evolução do setor no contexto que se aproxima. Com a adesão à CEE, florescem então um conjunto de Políticas Industriais
destinadas à dinamização, evolução e modernização do setor em estudo, que irão ser a base do crescimento desta indústria em aspetos fundamentais. Desta forma, procura-se compreender de que modo a adesão de Portugal às Comunidades impactou a indústria nacional do calçado, a partir dessas Políticas Industriais, influenciando a posição do setor no próprio panorama das indústrias transformadoras nacionais.
The object of this dissertation is the study of the Portuguese footwear industry in the context of Portugal's integration into the European Economic Community in 1986. With the aim of understanding how the footwear sector changed during the last two decades of the 20th century, a historical perspective is given of the evolution of the industry from its conception in Portugal to its leap to a level of great importance in the Portuguese industrial panorama. On the eve of Portugal's accession to the EEC, an analysis is made of the sector's situation, seeking to understand how this phenomenon is received and interpreted by Portuguese footwear industrialists and companies, as well as their expectations and misgivings about the sector's evolution in the coming context. With the accession to the EEC, a set of industrial policies aimed at boosting, evolving and modernising the sector under study came into being, which would be the basis for the growth of this industry in fundamental aspects. The aim here is to understand how Portugal's accession to the European Communities impacted the national footwear industry, based on these industrial policies, influencing the sector's position in the panorama of national manufacturing industries.
