Análise à cobertura dos Rankings das Escolas no Jornal Público

Abstract

O presente relatório é o resultado do estágio curricular de mestrado de três meses na secção Ímpar e Mundo do jornal Público, que decorreu entre setembro e dezembro de 2022. Este trabalho analisa a cobertura dos Rankings das Escolas, realizados pelo Público, nos anos de 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016 e 2022, de forma a perceber a sua evolução. Para complementar a análise, realizaram-se entrevistas com Rui Barros e Andreia Sanches, parte da equipa que realizou os rankings. A investigação permitiu perceber o aumento da informação disponibilizada, como razão para o crescimento da cobertura anual e para a organização dos jornais, a prevalência da notícia, reportagem e da infografia e os critérios para a escolha das escolas destacadas. Permitiu entender ainda o valor-notícia da relevância como sendo subjacente à realização dos rankings, como os rankings são parte de uma forma de jornalismo watchdog para vigiar a ação do Estado, e como os valores de contexto socioeconómico divulgados depois de 2012 vieram mitigar os efeitos mercantilizantes dos rankings apontados pelos críticos.

The present report is the result of a three-month internship as part of my master's degree program at the "Ímpar” e “Mundo" sections of the Portuguese newspaper Público, which took place between September and December 2022. This work analyses the coverage of School Rankings published by Público in the years 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2022 in order to understand their evolution. To complement the analysis, interviews were conducted with journalists Rui Barros and Andreia Sanches, who are part of the team responsible for creating the rankings. The research allowed me to understand the increase in information provided as a reason for the growth in the yearly coverage and the newspapers’ organisation. It also highlighted the prevalence of news, reports, and infographics, as well as the criteria for selecting the featured schools. It further allowed to conclude on the news-value of relevance as an underlying factor for creating the rankings. Rankings are also seen as part of a watchdog journalism approach to monitor the actions of the state, and that socioeconomic values of context released after 2021 have mitigated the commercializing effects of rankings that were pointed out by critics.
