The tile has been used for hundreds of years in Portugal and its heritage importance is nationally and internationally recognized, so it is also important to understand the elements that contribute to its safeguard. It is in this sense that the SOS Azulejo project appears in 2007, seeking to combat the serious destruction of this heritage, and in this way, to safeguard it. This dissertation analyzes the way in which Público newspaper reported the destruction of the tile heritage in the Lisbon metropolitan area between 2006 and 2021, diagnosing the situation (through the collection of data related to vandalism, considering as such acts that purposely damage other public or private goods, negligence, which refers to the loss of goods due to negligence, and not by a purposeful act directed towards the destruction of that good, and theft) and how the SOS Azulejo project is mentioned as an intervening agent in situations of safeguarding (namely the acts of identification, classification, documentation, protection, valorization, conservation, preservation, investigation, research, education, training, awareness, transmission, dissemination and promotion of heritage), having these acts selected based on the reading of n. 107/2001 (8 September). From the data collection and analysis, it is concluded that the SOS Azulejo project seems to have a positive impact, with a decrease in cases of destruction and an increase in cases of safeguard, and greater intervention by the population in both types of situations and in the alert of cases of destruction, to be verified after the creation of SOS Azulejo.
