This study examines the impact of school closures on parental
labour supply during the COVID-19 pandemic in Portugal. Using
quarterly data from the Portuguese Employment Survey, we
estimate the effect of school closures on weekly hours worked by
parents of children under 12 years old, using a differences-in differences approach. Our results show that school closures led to
significant reductions in the labour supply of mothers. These
findings highlight the gendered nature of the burden of childcare,
suggesting the need for policy interventions to support working
parents, particularly mothers, during times of school closures and
other disruptions to childcare arrangements
