Routine analysis of used oils plays a fundamental role in the maintenance and preservation of the machinery in which it operates, since early detection of oil contamination or degradation can prevent damage to the equipment. The fact that there is a high demand for services in this area, and that the laboratory already had the necessary equipment for most of the tests, led to the interest in the imple-mentation of a set of analysis of lubricating oils, with immediate effect at the SGS Natural Resources laboratory, in Sines. Thus, the methods for determining density, kinematic viscosity, TAN, organic chlo-ride content, infrared spectroscopy by FT-IR and water content by Karl Fischer titration were implemen-ted. After the implementation of all methodologies, they were tested and proven based on the respec-tive internationally accepted norms and standards, in order to assess the precision and accuracy of the methods studied. Viscosity determination and FT-IR infrared spectroscopy methods proved to be very repeatable and accurate methods, being the only methods for which it was possible to acquire MRC. The remaining methods, density, TAN, water content by Karl Fischer titration and organic chloride con-tent were only evaluated taking into account their repeatability. This parameter was evaluated and pro-ven, and it was considered that all methods produce repeatable results. After the work was completed, the laboratory was able to carry out the conformity assessment of lubricating oils, based on reference standards and product and market specifications, managing to pro-vide a quality response to a new matrix, as well as attract new sets of customers.
