In an effort to safeguard and enhance value propositions, an increasing number of incumbents
are structuring their operations around ecosystems. Indeed, ecosystems disrupt industries by
creating joint value for all market players. Even though incumbents bring along exceptional
assets to build ecosystems, historically, existing firms struggled to succeed in this sphere. By
reviewing and combining existing literature with insights gained from the consulting project at
the Portuguese incumbent Fidelidade that aims to build an ecosystem in the longevity space,
this paper identifies five determinants of success and three recommendations for incumbents to
succeed in building ecosystems.
