José de Mello recently defined as part of its strategy the internationalisation of its
portfolio, immediately triggering a reflection about how that goal should be approached.
This work aims to be a possible departure point for that reflection. Therefore, it summarizes
relevant findings at which literature arrived, not only on internationalisation of family
businesses, but also on IPOs of family businesses, since, as literature shows, both topics are
intimately related. Research results are compared with Jerónimo Martins and Sonae past
experiences, as well as with current José de Mello’s board members’ state of affairs about
those themes
