Pioneering commercialized technologies, such as the Internet or GPS, were developed initially
for military purposes. For decades, defense industry innovations had an enormous influence on
the development of commercial technologies. Due to the high complexity of defense industry
products, development processes are lengthy, and costs are very high. This paper examines
defense innovation’s impact on the commercial industry today. A spotlight will be put on the
future of mobility, one of the most influential topics of today. Literature was analyzed and
discussed with expert knowledge from semi-structured qualitative interviews to answer the
research question.
