Reorienting critical priorities, reversing and diverging from the most common perspective of approach, the aim is to show how the mostly unpublished texts from António Botto's archive serve as a source for a better understanding of himself and enrich the debate around Fernando Pessoa, stimulating new crossings, interpretations and readings. Following the fruitful and promising path trodden by Anna Klobucka, the spotlight has been turned on Botto's efforts to scrutinise aspects related or relatable to the life and work of the “poet of heteronyms”. A permanent cultivator of paradoxes, giving full vent to his chameleon-like nature and contradictory vein, Botto, between dozens of pages, expressed flagrantly disparate opinions about Pessoa, with a surprising dysphony and versatility of his points of view. Showing how the hand that strokes is the same that punishes, he wore the mantle of biographer-friend-enthusiast, expressing intellectual esteem and affection for his companion, as well as that of verrucous commentator, rehearsing a campaign as cunning as it is truculent to belittle the Pessoa legacy and instrumentalise the Pessoa phenomenon. For a closer and more articulate understanding of the documentary masses compiled, the dissertation was divided into two parts: on the one hand, a proposal for a thematic-contextual analysis of texts attributed or attributable to Botto allusive to the artistic-historical career of Pessoa, where the antagonistic opinions are exposed and hypotheses of biographical, literary and psychosociological order are put forward for the heterogeneity of the approaches adopted; on the other, aimed at a vast and plural audience, a proposal to publish these texts, conceived as a quasi-book, through which unpublished or restrictedcirculation papers that are not included in the most recent editions published are made known. The project's focus is on the multiple and dissonant sides of the poetic-existential universe of Pessoa, extracted from a select set of texts by Botto, which are analysed and edited here
