This work project presents how CIOs, CTOs, and CDOs need to adapt to benefit from emerging
business and technology ecosystems. Based on IT-executive interviews, changes on
characteristics, activities, and responsibilities were analyzed, and three key themes were
identified. The study outlines factors on how IT-executives need to adapt and reveals
importance of a clear role definition, development of executives, and governance structure.
Practice displays that many activities and responsibilities overlap in current roles. Based on the
findings, data analysis, and the practical implications and contribution of the research provide
a view on how IT-executives need to cope with emerging ecosystems.
