A tradução da Literatura Infantil sempre ocupou um lugar periférico no tocante ao seu posicionamento nos sistemas literários. Inserindo-se no âmbito dos Estudos de Tradução, a presente dissertação visa tentar compreender o estatuto da tradução de Literatura Infantil em Portugal enquanto agente ao serviço didático e/ou lúdico do público leitor-alvo, da sociedade e do sistema cultural em causa. Com este intuito, depois de identificadas as traduções e adaptações portuguesas da obra canónica de Daniel Defoe, The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1719), publicadas em dois períodos distintos – o Estado Novo e as duas primeiras décadas do século XXI –, a dissertação centrar-se-á numa análise comparada de dois casos paradigmáticos e representativos dos períodos em causa, do ponto de vista da função didática da tradução e adaptação de textos para os mais jovens.
The translation of children's literature has always occupied a peripheral place within literary systems. In the scope of Translation Studies, the present dissertation aims to evaluate how far the translation of children's literature in Portugal is effective in providing a service to the target-readers, to society itself and to its cultural system. After identifying the Portuguese translations and adaptations of Daniel Defoe's canonical work, The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1719), published in two distinct periods – during the “Estado Novo” and in the first two decades of the 21st century, the dissertation carries out a comparative analysis of two cases which are paradigmatic and representative of the two periods in question, focusing on the didactic role of the translation and adaptation of children’s literature.
