Access to financing for sustainability is commonly mentioned as one of the main challenges for
SMEs in becoming more sustainable. This work focuses on Portuguese SMEs and explores the
importance they attribute to finance as a lever to improve their sustainability, as well as the main
challenges faced by them in accessing sustainable finance. 20 challenges possibly conditioning
Portuguese SMEs’ access to sustainable finance were identified and categorized. A survey
among 563 Portuguese SMEs substantiates the existence of most of these challenges but suggests
the existence of levers to improve SMEs’ sustainability more important than access to finance for
sustainability.
