importância e dimensão do empreendimento.
características únicas da arquitectura e do espaço urbano da povoação.
O presente trabalho caracteriza a arquitectura e o urbanismo do povoado e desenvolve
Propõe a
classificação do núcleo urbano, como centro histórico mineiro, e a salvaguarda e
valorização do património paisagístico, urbanístico e arquitectónico, referente à memória
The urban centre of S. Domingo’s Mine is a group of constructions, located in the heart of Mertola’s district, built to support the mining industry that worked there until 1965. The beginning of the industry and the establishment of the village occurred around 1858, by the grantee “Mason & Barry, Limited”, that in a short time developed a wide complex, with housing for its workers and directors, administration’s palace, schools, churches and playgrounds. Nowadays what remains in that industrial area is a vast amount of waste materials, with a ample crater of acid waters, and several buildings in ruins, that show the importance and dimension of the enterprise. Even though the urban centre keeps its original structure, with the closing of the mine it was the first place to be subjected to abandon and then to the pressure of its reuse, which lead to the disarranged and unqualified constructions of illegal outbuildings that threaten its unique architectural features and then to the village’s urban space. This work characterises the architecture and the place’s urbanism and develops some proposals for the intervention for a balanced rehabilitation process. It proposes the classification of the landscape, the urbanistic and architectural heritage that refers to the industrial memory, as a way of promoting the development through cultural tourism. A set of graphic and photographic elements are dealt with that will be able to inform you about the planning and managing instruments that will structure the rehabilitation of urban tissue and the valuing of the existing public places.
