A presente dissertação pretende aprofundar a investigação sobre as campanhas de obras a que o Mosteiro de Chelas foi sendo sujeito, com particular atenção nas que tiveram lugar no século XVI, procurando perceber as iniciativas construtivas ocorridas nesse período, numa perspetiva arquitetónica, mas também cruzando-as com o ambiente social e religioso da época, nomeadamente as reformas pré-tridentinas que na primeira metade do século XVI já estavam a condicionar as ordens com um decisivo espírito moralizante. Não obstante essa maior focalização no período quinhentista, existiu uma preocupação de fazer uma análise crítica, desde a fundação do mosteiro, até à sua extinção, sem esquecer a sua relação com o mundo exterior, ou seja, o modo como influenciou o contexto social em que se inseria, e também em que medida foi condicionado por esse envolvente. Ao investigarmos esse período tão falho em informação, procurámos ajudar a completar a cronologia do mosteiro e mesmo a compreensão dos seus momentos-chave, numa visão abrangente, desde a sua fundação até ao momento da sua extinção. Acresce a esses aspetos que o século XVI terá seguramente constituído um dos períodos mais importantes da sua história, seja do ponto de vista do impulso construtivo, seja atendendo à comunidade conventual. A pesquisa desenvolvida para este trabalho recorreu a documentação inédita, existente no Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo, em Lisboa.
This dissertation intends to deepen the research on how the campaigns of works to which the Monastery of Chelas was subjected, with particular attention to those that also had initiatives that took place in that period, from an architectural perspective, but intersecting with the social and religious environment of the city at that time, namely the pre-Tridentine reforms that in the first half the 16th century were already conditioning the orders with a decisive moral spirit. Despite this greater focus on the sixteenth century, there was a concern to make a critical analysis, from the foundation of the monastery, until its extinction, without forgetting its relationship with the outside world, that is, the way it influenced the social context in which it was inserted, and also, to what extent it was conditioned by this environment. By researching this period so lacking in data, we tried to help complete the chronology of the monastery and even the understanding of its key moments, in a comprehensive view, from its foundation to the moment of its extinction. In addition to these aspects, the 16th century must have been one of the most important periods in its history, whether from the architectural point of view, or in terms of the convent community
