O lixo plástico marinho nos fundos oceânicos e os seus efeitos para a Economia do Mar da UE

Abstract

This Master's Thesis aims to proceed with a bibliographical investigation of the problem of marine litter, highlighting the effects on the marine ecosystem and biodiversity as well as on the economy of the sea in the EU. The work was developed in four parts: First, plastic was contextualized within history, passing through the development of the “culture of plastic” until the Plastic Era of the present day. Then, it defined marine litter, encompassing the most recent concerns on the subject. It highlighted the effects of plastic on marine species and on the economy of coastal communities in the European Union. Finally, it demonstrated the existing legal solutions at the international level through the cooperation of Sovereign States, as well as the internal measures adopted by the European Union to contain marine litter that enters the sea. As it is an extremely relevant topic at a global level that encourages scientific investigations, it is intended to contribute to the gathering of information and data that enable awareness and knowledge of the problem, enabling knowledge of the population.

A presente Dissertação de Mestrado têm como objetivo proceder com a investigação bibliográfica da problemática do lixo plástico marinho evidenciando os efeitos para o ecossistema marinho e biodiversidade bem como para a economia do mar da UE. Desta forma, o trabalho foi desenvolvido em quatro partes: Primeiramente, contextualizou-se o plástico dentro da história, passando pelo desenvolvimento da “cultura do plástico” até a Era do Plástico nos dias atuais. A seguir, definiu o lixo plástico marinho englobando as mais recentes preocupações sobre o tema. Evidenciou os efeitos dos resíduos plásticos para as espécies marinhas e para a economia das comunidades costeiras do bloco europeu. Ao fim, demonstrou as soluções jurídicas existentes a nível internacional através da cooperação dos Estados- Soberanos bem como as medida internas adotadas pela União Europeia para a contenção do lixo plástico que entra no Mar. Por ser um tema de extrema relevância a nível global que incentiva as investigações científicas é que pretende-se contribuir com a reunião de informações e dados que possibilitem a sensibilização e conhecimento do problema, induzindo a conscientização de grande parte da população.
