This paper examines the influence of urbanization on the regime authority in African countries. We apply the instrumental variable country fixed effects estimation to estimate the impactc of a higher share of urban population on the Polity score of the Center for Systemic Peace. The instrumental variable sexplo it the variation in temperature. Furthermore, we employ the data from the Afro barometer to understand the individual-level effects of urban living on opinions on democracy and political institutions. We find that urbanization leads to an increase of the democratic nature of the regime authority and urban living is associated with critical thinking of the political actions.
