Resumo(s)
Even if only a small share of firms scaleup, those that do account for more than 50% of all gross job creation in SMEs. Borrowing from micro-level data on all non-financial firms in Portugal, this analysis contributes to the OECD’s ongoing workstream on scale-ups by investigating which SMEs scale-up and which don’t according to how they ranked among their peers in the same sector. All the studied dimensions –productivity, returns, debt, outsourcing and exports -are found to significantly impact SMEs propensity to scale-up. We discuss the possible insights for policymakers targeting growth in SMEs.
