This case study analyses the evolution of the Fin Tech JUMO from its early founding years to its position in the Sub-Saharan African market in 2021. It discusses the funding rounds and partnership approach employed by JUMO as part of its market expansion strategy and highlights the intricacies and challenges of the digital financial services market operating on the back of increasing mobile phone penetration rates in the continent. The teaching note provided at the end of this case study considers key topics such as JUMO’s funding and potential valuation, its business model and execution of strategic expansion plans, the possibility for success in the Nigerian marketplace, as well as the opportunities for alternative credit scoring in developed markets such as the EU and US.
