This thesis adopts a middle management perspective to examine the notion of organizational purpose in German manufacturing companies. Through eleven semi-structured interviews with middle managers, qualitative data was collected and analyzed using the Gioia methodology (Gioia, Corley, and Hamilton 2013). The developed model identifies five personal and institutional factors that influence middle managers’ level of adoption of the organizational purpose narrative. Assuming that a high degree of this level facilitates the process of an organization successfully pursuing its purpose narrative, practical implications on how to support this, are derived.
