The current environmental and social crisis demands a reflection on the present state of the world. Our current economic model, characterized by the indiscriminate use of resources, in a constant process of extraction, production, use and disposal, proved to be inefficient, bringing direct consequences to life on the planet. Society, while being interconnected with nature, has the power to change it, generating impacts that can be seen as social problems. This dissertation, starting from a theoretical perspective of ecological economics, will seek to discuss the circular economy, pointing to it as an alternative economic movement, which may contribute to the reduction of environmental and social impacts, enabling a scenario of more equity and social welfare. Therefore, the research will start with a literature review on sustainable development, and then carry out a state of art of circular economy, in order to map the scientific production on the subject in question. We will also address, with emphasis, the social dimension of the circular economy, and we will talk about the principles of the social and solidarity economy, and the relationship between the social and solidarity economy and the circular economy, as well as with industrial ecology, one of the main sub concepts of the circular economy. In the next moment, we will make use of document analysis and content analysis to present a project in a concrete context, in Alagoas, Brazil, entitled "Brick Cane", which uses ashes from sugarcane bagasse to develop soil-cement bricks, enabling the construction of affordable housing. Finally, we will discuss the set of potentials that emerge from this project, as well as the challenges to be faced in the process of solidifying and strengthening the circular economy movement, and the social and solidarity economy.
