Secas e fomes em Cabo Verde no alvorecer do século XX. A crise de 1901-1904. Causas e consequências

Abstract

A investigação histórica procura situar e interpretar os acontecimentos que afectam as sociedades humanas da forma o mais objectiva possível. Trazer ao conhecimento o porquê, o como, as causas e as consequências das crises de secas e fomes em Cabo Verde, em particular a de 1901-1904, bem como os actores que nela intervieram, naturais e humanos, sem afloramentos emocionais, foi o que se procurou na presente investigação visando esclarecer e compreender como aconteceu, e porque aconteceu, na justa medida em que as fontes o permitem. A melhor expectativa é que este trabalho possa abrir caminho para futuras investigações que conduzam a uma mais ampla compreensão das dinâmicas que permitiram que a antiga colónia portuguesa registasse cíclicos períodos de razia dos já de si débeis equilíbrios, sociais, económicos e estruturais presentes no arquipélago de Cabo Verde com uma muito expressiva perda de vidas.

The historical research seeks to situate and interpret the events that affect human societies as objectively as possible. To bring to the knowledge the why, how, causes and consequences of drought and famine crises in Cape Verde, in particular that of 1901-1904, as well as the actors who intervened in it, natural and human, without emotional outbursts, was what was sought in the present investigation in order to clarify and understand how it happened and why it happened to the extent that the sources allow for. The best expectation is that this work may pave the way for future investigations that lead to a broader understanding of the dynamics that drove the former Portuguese colony to cyclical periods of total destruction of the fragile social, economic and structural balances existing in Cape Verde with a very expressive loss of lives.
