Through the works of brazilian artists Adriana Varejão (1964-) and Rosângela Rennó (1962-), this dissertation aims to problematize the discussion about the production of identity discourses in the brazilian contemporary art scene, namely through the artists’ exhibitions presented in the portuguese institutional circuit. This investigation aims to delve into the multiple and diversified ways in which brazilian art has been developing in the 20th and 21st centuries, while also trying to establish an artistic context which still bears a connection to its society, while maintaining a significant international projection. Through different paths, both artists delve into important concepts such as identity and memory, while articulating notions of collective trauma, and reminiscing over ideas which are deeply connected with the past of brazilian art history and the country’s recent history and its colonial legacy. While exploring an exhibition that focuses on the context of 20th century brazilian art, from a collective point of view, and other exhibitions that showcase the works of both artists, this dissertation tries to highlight the themes in their artistic productions, connecting them with contemporary theoretical discussions articulated around post-colonial studies, while showing how brazilian art from the past century was always concerned with diversifying cultural narratives and decentralizing the field of art history.
