A presente investigação foi desenvolvida tendo em vista uma melhor compreensão das mensagens transmitidas pelos media acerca do autismo, tendo em conta que estes exercem um papel preponderante na forma de pensar do ser humano. Considerou-se igualmente importante caraterizar o conhecimento da população portuguesa acerca das perturbações do espetro do autismo. Para a concretização destes objetivos de investigação, foi realizada uma entrevista à diretora de uma das principais instituições de autismo em Portugal, foram analisados alguns dos principais meios de imprensa escrita e elaborado um questionário para uma análise mais aprofundada da perceção pública do autismo no país. Os resultados deste estudo refletem uma necessidade de maior atenção à temática do autismo.
The present investigation was elaborated with the goal of having a better understanding of the messages conveyed by the media about autism, considering that the media have a major role in the way of thinking of the human being. It becomes also important to characterise the existence of awareness by the portuguese population about the autism spectrum disorders. To achieve these research objectives, an interview was conducted with the director of one of the main autism institutions in Portugal, some of the main print media were analysed and a questionnaire was developed to further analyse the public perception of autism in the country. The results of this study reflect a need for greater attention to the topic of autism.
