Resumo(s)

Crowdfunding is a form of venture financing that has earned a lot of attention over the past years. Especially reward-based crowdfunding is a fairly popular way to acquire funding. This thesis explores the role of signaling theory within crowdfunding, focusing on sustainable ventures. A sample of 200 projects from the platform Kickstarter has been used for this research. The selected signals that were taken into account are patents, experience, and updates. As expected, a significant positive relationship has been found between sustainable orientation and project success, controlling for multiple campaign features that might be of influence. This means that sustainable crowdfunding projects are more likely to achieve their funding goal than non-sustainable projects. The thesis does not find any influence of the researched signals on the relationship between sustainable ventures and their crowdfunding successfulness. Insights and implications suggest entrepreneurs to focus more on other signals.
