In this dissertation, opinion articles in the Portuguese press, which refer to East Asian individuals, entities and communities, and media experiences lived by youths of East Asian origin residing in Portugal, taking into account the news which refer to their origin and their compatriots, are analyzed. Through the analysis of opinion articles, aimed to find the visibility and representations of East Asian communities in Portugal, there are identified four different forms of representation associated to Chinese and one form associated to Japanese, which can cumulatively be negative, positive and neutral. The analysis of testimonies suggests two modes of reaction to news contents: internalizing images which do not imply divergence between the information transmitted through the contents and the original perceptions of interviewees; memorizing images which imply divergence between the information transmitted through the contents and the original perceptions of interviewees. There are also suggested three possible variables which may influence the decision of whether to adopt or to reject discourses in news contents which refer to their East Asian ethnicity: the sense of belonging to the ethnic group (high low); the position on major news media (unquestioning skeptical); the existence of divergence between the information transmitted through the contents and the original perceptions of receivers (yes no).
