This dissertation aims to understand how the appreciation of artisanal activity may be related to a wider alternative in cultural and lifestyle changes, from materialist and consumption values towards pot-materialist values, which give priority to aspects such as quality of life, wellbeing, self-expression, autonomy, environmental concerns, and a new relationship to work. For that purpose, I have researched, through in-depth interviews and online contents, the representations and motivations of a small set of urban artisans, who participate in a women’s collective in the town of Fortaleza, in Brazil. Throughout the analysis of those interviews and discourse in the collective’s online social networks, I aim to understand to what extent the flourishing of such activities may indicate a move by those artisans against the hegemony of the industrial and labour system, and foster relationships privileging ties between producers, buyers, markets, and the environment, along with female and black empowerment. The results, albeit from a non-representative sample, do strongly indicate such value orientations.
