Os Lusíadas: o projeto de uma edição e as pinturas de Vieira Portuense (1765-1805)

Abstract

Nos anos do virar para o século XIX, o pintor Vieira Portuense (1765-1805) viu-se envolvido num projeto de ilustrar Os Lusíadas do poeta Camões, numa edição projetada pelo mecenas D. Rodrigo de Sousa Coutinho (1755-1812) e o tipógrafo Giambattista Bodoni (1740-1813). Tal edição nunca seria materializada, ficando como seu testemunho a correspondência relativa à mesma e uma série de esboços a óleo feitos pelo artista. Estes serviriam de ensaio para as ilustrações, que seriam depois abertas em gravura por Francesco Bartolozzi (1727-1815), mas também algumas finalizadas em pintura, nomeadamente a Súplica de Inês de Castro, obra que se encontrava desaparecida até 2008. Numa abordagem monográfica, a presente dissertação visa assim estudar estas pinturas de um ponto de vista histórico e iconográfico, procurando também acrescentar novos dados biográficos relativos às mesmas e integrá-las na obra e no tempo de Vieira Portuense.

In the years of the turn of the nineteenth century, the painter Vieira Portuense (1765-1805) saw himself involved in a project to illustrate The Lusiads by the poet Camões, in an edition orchestrated by the patron D. Rodrigo de Sousa Coutinho (1755-1812) and the typographer Giambattista Bodoni (1740-1813). Such edition would never come to fruition, leaving as its testimony the letters exchanged about it as well as a series of oil sketches painted by the artist. These would serve as rehearsal for the illustrations, which would then be engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi (1727-1815), but some would also be finalized in paintings, namely The Supplication of Inês de Castro, whose whereabouts were unknown until 2008. By using a monographic approach, the present dissertation aims to study these paintings from an historical and iconographical view point, while also looking to add new biographical data regarding them and contextualizing them in the work and time of Vieira Portuense.
