O último Manto Real da Coroa Portuguesa é um objeto de Estado que participava numa
cerimónia única. É uma peça de indumentária-insígnia que tem sido sujeita a diversos
tratamentos danosos, e as condições de exposição também provocaram, ou agravaram, a sua
degradação. Algumas das patologias são profundas, pondo em causa a sua estabilidade e
perturbando a perceção do objeto.
Este caso é um excelente exemplo da relevância da pesquisa documental e do estudo sobre os
valores para a preservação do património cultural. A tomada de decisão depende diretamente
desses resultados, e requer uma equipa multidisciplinar e consciente da dimensão simbólica
(ou meta-material) da peça. De outro modo, a eficácia dos tratamentos (e com isso, a própria
finalidade da nossa profissão) fica comprometida.
A dissertação divide-se em duas componentes, uma teórica e outra prática. A primeira inclui
um levantamento documental, apresenta a biografia da peça, o seu contexto cerimonial e a
semiologia dos materiais, que constituem assuntos fundamentais para o conhecimento deste
objeto. Na componente prática, focamo-nos essencialmente na deformação que a peça
apresenta e no processo que nos permitiu recuperar a forma das peles de arminho (e
consequentemente, recuperar a montagem original do Manto); e inclui um estudo preliminar
para esse mesmo tratamento. Referimos ainda alguns dos materiais de conservação (usados
para o tratamento de têxteis) e sugerimos outros recursos que poderiam constituir alternativas
mais seguras.
The last Royal Mantle of the Portuguese Crown is a State object, and formed an integral part of a unique ceremony. This insignia-costume piece has been subjected to several harmful treatments, and the conditions under which it has been exhibited have caused further degradations. Some of the pathologies are profound, jeopardizing its stability and disturbing the perception of the object. This case is an excellent example of the relevance of documentary research and the study of values for the preservation of our cultural heritage. The decision-making process depends directly on these results, and requires a multidisciplinary team that is also aware of the symbolic (or meta-material) dimension of the piece. Otherwise, it is the effectiveness of the treatments (and thus the very purpose of our profession) that may be compromise. The documentary survey presents the biography and the ceremonial context of the piece, and a semiology of materials: crucial issues for the knowledge of this object. In the practical component, we focus mainly on the deformation the Mantle presents and on the process that allowed us to recover the shape of the ermine fur-skins parts (and, as a result, the original assembly of the Mantle); and we present a preliminary study for this same treatment. We also mention some of the conservation materials (used for the treatment of textiles) and other resources thar could be safer alternatives.
