A reflexão sobre Estudos de Tradução e Estudos de Literatura Infantil tem vindo a desenvolver-se prolificamente sob diferentes perspectivas, através das obras de investigadores conceituados nestas áreas. O trabalho em apreço cruza as duas áreas através de um estudo de caso de tradução de literatura infantil. Theodore Seuss Geisel, conhecido como Dr. Seuss, cativou com as suas obras muitas crianças norte-americanas ao longo de várias gerações. Horton Hears a Who!, publicada em 1954, é a história de um elefante e do seu relacionamento com outros animais da selva e com uns seres minúsculos que tenta proteger a todo o custo, transmitindo a ideia de que “A person’s a person, no matter how small”. O presente trabalho de projecto tem como objetivo principal apresentar uma proposta de tradução para português do Brasil de Horton Hears a Who!, obra nunca traduzida para português, tendo em vista uma eventual publicação por uma editora brasileira. Simultaneamente, pretende contribuir para a divulgação do autor nos países de língua portuguesa, como o Brasil e Portugal. O universo estético, lúdico e pedagógico que se encontra nas obras de Dr. Seuss resulta de uma complexidade estilística e de uma grande imaginação ao nível da construção textual e das ilustrações cheias de humor e apelativas às crianças.
Children's Literature Studies and Translation Studies have watched a growing interest from academics and researchers worldwide not only as fields of study alone but also as intersecting research areas. This work is the result of a study case in the field of Translation of Children’s Literature. Theodore Seuss Geisel, known as Dr. Seuss, has been attracting the attention of American children with his books through generations. Horton Hears a Who!, published in 1954, is the story of an elephant living in the jungle and trying to protect some tiny little creatures he met from other animals and all sorts of perils. The message underlying the story is that “A person is a person, no matter how small”. It is the aim of this project to provide the first translation of Horton Hears a Who! into Brazilian Portuguese, having in mind a possible publication by a Brazilian publisher in the near future. This work also intends to contribute to a better knowledge of the author in Portuguese-speaking countries, such as Brazil and Portugal. The aesthetic, playful and pedagogical universe found in Dr. Seuss’ books results from its stylistics and great imagination in terms of textual construction and illustrations, full of humor and greatly appealing to children.
