O presente trabalho visa analisar o imaginário cultural e patrimonial da cidade de Coimbra, no decorrer do século XX à contemporaneidade, e abordar, do mesmo modo, a forma como a cidade pretende ser vista a uma escala local, nacional ou internacional, segundo imagens seleccionadas pela comunidade. Embora a definição de imaginário seja pouco exacta, este conceito pode representar as visões comuns e partilhadas por um colectivo, construídas a partir de um conjunto de imagens, símbolos ou emoções. Estas imagens podem representar o modo como uma comunidade reconhece um lugar, segundo a sua memória colectiva, e por
aquilo que ambiciona ser no futuro. Neste sentido, o trabalho pretende compreender que imagens representaram a cidade de Coimbra no século XX e, actualmente, que imagens são seleccionadas para
representar este território no futuro, segundo a realidade patrimonial e cultural da cidade. A partir deste caso de estudo, em concreto, é analisado o conceito de imaginário nas cidades, tal como as acções de promoção e projecção cultural, pois são as imagens colectivas de um lugar que constroem o imaginário e reflectem as perspectivas da comunidade em relação a esse espaço.
The present dissertation aims to analyze the cultural imaginary, based on the cultural heritage, of the city of Coimbra from the 20th century to contemporary times, and to approach, in the same way, the way the city intends to be seen on a local, national and international scale, according to images selected by the community. Although the definition of imaginary is debatable, this concept can represent the common and shared views of a collective, build upon a set of images, symbols or emotions. These images can represent the way in which a community recognizes a place, according to its collective memory, but also the way that same place intends to be seen in the future. And so, this dissertation intends to comprehend which images represented Coimbra in the 20th century and, nowadays, which images are selected to represent the same territory in the future, according to the cultural heritage reality of the city. Taking this investigation as a starting point, the concept of imaginary in the cities will be analysed, as well as the ways of promotion and cultural projection around the concept, for these collective images of a place are responsible for creating the imaginary associated with that same place, and therefore reflect the perspectives of the community about that geographical space.
