In the context of globalization, China has more economic and cultural exchanges with Portuguese-speaking countries. Therefore, it is increasingly important to develop students’ intercultural competence. But in China, the teaching model is still centered on knowledge of grammar and words. This has led many students to learn Portuguese for many years without knowing how to use Portuguese for intercultural communication. On the other hand, the use of film is a very valuable means of teaching a foreign language. The film records physical reality, but portrays it differently from ordinary human experience (Arnheim, 1957). The film can stimulate students’ interest in learning. Students can learn about the culture, social customs, daily communication and political system of Portuguese-speaking countries through films. However, the successful use of films depends on many factors. The present study aims to analyse how film is used in the teaching of Portuguese, especially in the development of intercultural competence. Based on relevant theories, the study used questionnaires and interviews to survey 60 students who learned Portuguese and a Portuguese teacher. The survey results show that how to choose film materials and plan teaching activities from the perspective of teachers and students. Reasonable suggestions are made to provide reference for teachers to improve and assist teaching and Chinese students to learn Portuguese and develop intercultural competence in a better way.
