The collection, labeling, and improvement of data are instrumental tasks for companies that build artificial-intelligence-driven solutions. These companies have only recently started to crowdsource these tasks to the gig economy. The relationship between the companies and the crowds are complex, and roadblocks and misunderstanding characterize their collaboration. The challenges range from understanding the motivations of the crowd to the management of the crowd in the face of technological change and the increasing automation of their work. This thesis is an empirical investigation of the relationship between the crowd and a Portuguese company,Unbabel. By means of a community survey and in-depth conversations with Unbabelstakeholders, a set of recommendationsare developed that aims to guide AI organizations looking to engage in ethical relationships with the gig community.
