This paper studies the effect of the European migrantcrisis on public immigration opinion in 18 European countries, using ESS datafrom2012 to 2018. A country-fixed effectsregressionwas estimatedin order to examine(1) key factors shaping public opinion on immigration on an individual-and a macro-level, (2) whether opinion on immigration shiftedand(3)if the mag-nitude,by which key factors affect publicimmigrationopinion, was altered during the crisis.The main findings suggest thateconomic fears and cultural values are significantly shaping immigration opinion on an individual-level, while social welfare concerns are significant on a macro-level. Finally, the results indicate that the crisis improvedimmigration opinionand al-tered the magnitude of explanatory variables.
