This thesis aims at identifying the logics of circulation and compartmentalization of Portuguese palaces dating to the Avis-Beja dynasty, that is, the period between the reigns of Manuel I (1495-1521) and Henrique (1578-1580). Where possible, this thesis assesses how these logics relate to the social and cultural scene in sixteenth-century Portugal. The first part discusses the relationship between residential buildings and the various types of exterior spaces, as well as the processes of accessing such buildings. It then analyses the devices of vertical and horizontal circulation, along with the paths that they create. It also evaluates these devices against typologies studied by other authors. The second part draws on the previous analysis of morphological characteristics to explore them with regard to their usage. This thesis examines what took place in those spaces, who had access to them, and how these aspects related to courtly protocol, both in everyday life and during special, ceremonial events.
